Abbott House & ADU

This unique property in SW Portland with a creek and in the forest is mostly in an environmental conservation overlay, so we needed to be strategic about the sizing and locations of the new ADU and house. The house replaced their existing dwelling and could not be outside this footprint, but the owners needed a place to live while the house was being constructed, hence the ADU was built for their family of four. The ADU being built first would normally be required to match the style of their house – a double wide, but the goal was a modern design not meeting the city’s requirements. This meant two land use adjustments for matching a future house and being placed in front of the house in the only buildable location.
City requirements aside, this house and ADU are insulated above code, feature metal roofs for fire-resistance and low maintenance, and expansive views into the forest. Only the ADU is pictured.
