Domaine Drouhin of Oregon

Architect of Record: Ernie Munch

Completed: 1988

Location: Dayton, Oregon

Robert Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin purchased his Oregon estate in 1988. Maison Joseph Drouhin is a negociant, founded in Beaune, France in 1880. Their investment in Yamhill County is considered a milestone for the Oregon Wine industry.

When we began the design of the winery in late 1988, Robert Drouhin said that he wanted a building to fit into the Oregon landscape, yet look as though it had been built by a Frenchman. The floor and roof tiles, the stucco, window hardware and most of the winemaking equipment were imported from France. Robert also would not compromise any step of the process lest the quality of the wine itself be compromised. Gravity plays an important winemaking role. Pumping is minimized to preserve the delicacy of Pinot Noir. The grapes enter the top of the Domaine Drouhin Oregon winery at harvest and emerge as bottled wine 50 vertical feet and several years later.
